Press Release: ‘Douvoordag Releases Long Awaited Debut Album!

Post Image

DOUVOORDAG’s (Ilse and Jattie de Beer) debut album, DIE AVONTUUR, was officially released online on 5 October 2018 and immediately claimed the number one position on iTunes!

Their latest single, Manifes, can also be heard on various radio stations, across the country, and the music video of this captivating song is currently in eighth position on kykNET’s Top20.

Music lovers have been familiar with the group’s unique sound for some time now. Not only have excerpts of two of their songs been used on the soundtrack of the popular Afrikaans movie, Mooirivier, but their first two singles, Uitsig and Desembers, were also included on the Afrikaans is Groot Volume 8 and Afrikaans is Groot Volume 9 albums, respectively. Another track, Skrapnel, was included on the In Afrikaans Volume 1 album and Hande Vat, the theme song of the TV series, Dorpsdraai that was also written by Jattie, was also included on the In Afrikaans Volume 2 album. During December 2017, DOUVOORDAG was also part of the very first In Afrikaans concert series at Hartenbos, where they shared the stage with well-known musicians such as Jo Black, Leah, Robbie Wessels and Jan de Wet. The concert was attended by more than 6 000 people.

Ilse and Jattie have been singing together since 2008. They originally performed under an English name at weddings and corporate functions, but changed it to DOUVOORDAG when they started creating original Afrikaans music.

Both of them come from musical families and have been singing since school. Ilse was a member of the Stellenberg Girls Choir, Pro Cantu Youth Choir and the Stellenbosch University Choir, and Jattie was part of Affies Boys Choir and the Tukkies Camerata Choir. He also won the prize for Best Original Composition in Tukkies’s annual serenade competition for four consecutive years. Jattie and his group, Vertical, won a SAMA in 2009 for their second album, Stil.

Jattie, a very gifted songwriter, is equally comfortable with writing in Afrikaans and English, as well as creating various genres of music. This is evident by the vast number of diverse artists who have recorded some of his songs, including Louis Brittz (gospel), Zak van Niekerk (humorous), Len Muller (alternative), Dans Dans Lisa, Izak Davel (pop) and Leon Gropp to name but a few. He also wrote material for new upcoming albums by artists like Jo Black, Touch of Class and Roan Ash. Jattie and well-known songwriter and producer, Johan Vorster were also co-creators of the theme song of the television program, Die Groot Ontbyt, called Kom Ons Gaan Groot, which is sung by Jo Black.

Jattie, a registered industrial psychologist with a master’s degree, works as an independent consultant when he is not on stage. Ilse has a B.Com. Honours degree and established herself as a respected name working behind the scenes in the Afrikaans music industry. She has worked for Merchant Music, Coleske Artists and the Atterbury Theater, and was also involved with productions such as Afrikaans is Groot, the Ghoema Music Awards, Gospel Skouspel, Innibos and the In Afrikaans concert series in Hartenbos. She is currently part of the marketing team at a group of companies, called Inhoud Huis Musiek, In Afrikaans and Flagship Productions, who manages artists such as Robbie Wessels, Jo Black, Appel and Roan Ash, and is also the coordinator of the In Afrikaans concert series in Hartenbos, which will be taking place in December.

Jattie is the creative mind behind DOUVOORDAG and is responsible for creating most of the group’s songs.  Their music is a reflection of their own lives and approach to life. One of their most popular songs, Desembers, is about how they first met during a December holiday in 2005. “The songs are paintings of our personal journey of internal discoveries and treasured memories. Some were written as encouragement and others to remind us why we decided to choose this adventure in the first place,” says Ilse. Vir Ren is a song that they wrote for their sixteen month old son and Uitsig was the first song they wrote four years ago, which kick-started this amazing journey for them. Landsberghoek was written by Jattie and is about the memories he made with his siblings on their family farm when they were little.

Jattie was very involved with the production of DIE AVONTUUR and worked with some of the country’s best producers, such as Jake Odendaal and Gideon Botes to complete the final project. DIE AVONTUUR took four years of hard work and they have managed to create something new and different in Afrikaans. “This album is the story of our personal adventure. It is also the story of each and every person who long to have a positive impact on the world,” shares Jattie.

DOUVOORDAG recently launched their album in front of a packed audience at Atterbury Theatre. The launch was attended by several well-known artists like Riana Nel, Robbie Wessels, Kaleidoskoop, Roan Ash, Simoné Nortmann and Johan Vorster. Their debut CD will be released in association with Inhoud Huis Musiek and will be distributed by Universal Musiek.

If you are in the mood for a moving combination of positive, hopeful and upbeat music, DOUVOORDAG’s DIE AVONTUUR is definitely for you.

Press Release: ‘DECCA Releases New Single, Saint Paddy’s Jig!’

Post Image

The popular instrumental group, DECA’s, striking arrangements conquered the hearts of fans, across the country, from the very start. Their fresh, modern and charming interpretation of crowd favourites is the key ingredient behind their instant success and resonates with audiences of all ages.

Since their debut album, Black Sails, DECA has been experimenting with a wide variety of sounds and styles – from pop to folk. But it’s the Irish flavour that lies closest to their hearts. The latest single from their second album, II, further explores this genre. St. Paddy’s Jig is a fresh combination of violin, guitar, and a new addition to the DECA sound – the mandolin. “Wherever we perform, we can immediately detect a change in the crowd’s energy when we play an Irish song”,  says Douw and Herman. They believe that Irish music possesses a certain quality that inadvertently lifts the spirit and makes people want to dance. St. Paddy’s Jig, an original DECA composition, is no exception.

Herman Steyn (on the violin) and Douw Steyn (on the guitar) are veterans in the music industry, with more than 26 years of combined experience between them.  Douw is also co-owner of the record label, Son Records, which he started with William de Bruin. What started out as a project to keep their creativity flowing, ended up becoming something much more and DECA was born. The group has since shared the stage with renowned artists and performed at various functions, launches and parties, including Aardklop.

Press Release: ‘Track Created In a Bathtub Broke SAFFA Artist In London!

Post Image

It has been South African artist, ANNA WOLF’s dream to work with producer Pete Boxta Martin and songwriter Dantae Johnson ever since she landed in London!

Boxta Martin is a multi-award winning and Oscar-shortlisted London-based producer that has written, produced and remixed for a variety of top-selling artist such as James Arthur, Arrow Benjamin, Jesse J, Mali Music, Missy Elliot, Rizzle Kicks, Sugababes, to name a few. Dantae Johnson is Boxta Martin’s mega talented business partner and is signed to Sony ATV in the United Kingdom.

Wolf knew someone, who knew someone, who knew someone, who knew Boxta Martin and Johnson. The only way to get their attention, was to write a hit song with a fresh sound.

Wolf, previously known as Tailor, went through her thousand-plus demos and relived the nostalgia of all her growing pains as an artist until one night she wrote a song that she believed would speak through “a Boxta Martin and Johnson’s produced lens” to millions.

She took her guitar and went to the bathtub, recorded herself on her cell phone and performed the song by stumping her feet against the tub to create a sound that is still used in the final mix.

She sent the song to Boxta Martin and Johnson who summoned her to the iconic Matrix Recording Studios (Adele, Lana Del Rey) where they recorded her new single, BELIEVER!

Boxta Martin and Johsnon offered ANNA WOLF an artist development deal under their company The Three Bears Entertainment and is busy recording a full E.P. with her in studio.

The now London-based ANNA WOLF wants to share her journey  of discovery with her TAILOR BECOMING ANNA WOLF South African Tour.

She will land in South Africa in November and plan to do an intimate string of performances where her hypnotic stage presence will captivate the imaginations of those who dare to follow their dreams.

Press Release: ‘Radio Presenter, Martin Bester, Unveils a Big Surprise!’

Post Image

Just when you thought that Martin Bester couldn’t impress you more, this acclaimed radio presenter and entertainer manages to come up with something fresh and new to surprise his fans with.

His brand new single, VIR DIE LIEFDE, is not only the perfect example of his talent and creativity but also promises to become a favourite on playlists and radio charts across the country.

This upbeat pop song, written by Martin, Dolf Willemse and Ewald Janse Van Rensburg, has a powerful and inspiring message that will resonate with audiences of all ages. “The song is very personal. Over the past few years, I have come to realise that there comes a time when you have to draw a line in the sand. Everyone is not going to like you and that is okay, because you shouldn’t be what others want you to be. Love will always prevail, especially if you are honest,” he shares about the message behind the song. “A lot of people will be able to relate to the song, because there is a lot of pressure on us to please others. But you should not allow that. Live life to the fullest and don’t be afraid to feel, even if it hurts. There is a place for everyone on this earth and you must just find yours.”

VIR DIE LIEFDE follows the release of his previous catchy single, Ek Het Geweet, a pop song with a punk rock vibe, which was very well received by the public and still regularly features on the radio. The music video, which was filmed in Pretoria, has also already been viewed by thousands of people on YouTube. Aside from his previous release, he is also known for hits like Wat weet ek tog, Ou Spoor and Sterre. “I want listeners to connect with my songs and apply them to their own lives. I love it when my music ‘speaks’ to people on the dance floor, while on road trip in the car or when home alone,” he says.

Martin is one of the most popular radio presenters in the country. The artist has presented numerous television shows, including Wie’s my Liefie on VIA. As an actor, he has made appearances in movies such as Pretville, Vrou soek Boer and Sonskyn Beperk. Martin is also the lead singer of the SAMA nominated band Kinky Robot, whose first single, Hobie Beach, was recently included in an English text book for grade elevens. His first solo album, Vir Die Eerste Keer, was also an instant success and delivered many chart topping hits.

His job takes him to popular stages, festivals and functions locally and abroad, and he is currently busy travelling with his Vir Die Liefde Tour. “Entrance is free, but we do request audiences to bring along a blanket or something for the less fortunate. More information about this initiative is available on my social media platforms,” he explains.

Martin Bester’s main goal is to touch people’s hearts with his music. VIR DIE LIEFDE will not only exceed this goal, but will also strengthen his place in the South African music industry. This single will not only inspire audiences to be themselves, but will also remain in their hearts and ears long after hearing it for the first time.

Press Release: Wonderboom Surprises With New Single And SA Tour!

Post Image

WONDERboom needs no introduction!  After 22 years, nine albums, multiple awards and a lifetime of experiences behind them, they are still going strong as one of South Africa’s most legendary rock bands. Best-known for their fundamental rock sound, the band has surprised listeners over the years by experimenting with different genres, ranging from funk through to punk and even afro-dance, but it is their live performances that continue to captivate audiences. Now, fans can look forward to a surprise hat-trick from the band – a brand new single, music video and South African tour!

The recent release of their ninth album, Rising Sun, after a lengthy hiatus – it’s been seven years since the release of their last album – signalled the start of something very special, and WONDERboom is now set to unleash their brand new single, Praying Mantis. Penned by band members Cito and Martin Schofield, the song is about the fatality of falling for a femme fatale.

“We wanted to capture the tragedy of falling for a femme fatale, while also depicting her sadness. It’s about the realisation that your demise is inevitable and, although she must do it, she feels devastated about taking you out,” explains Cito.

The single, which forms part of a beautiful story weaved together throughout Rising Sun, is fresh territory for them.

“It is different from anything else on the album and anything WONDERboom has ever done,” says drummer Johnathan Bell. Bassist Wade Williams agrees: “As a musician, I think the greatest satisfaction comes from being part of something that listeners can relate to while pushing the boundaries into a place that is fresh and unusual.”

The music video for the track will be released on 30 July 2018.

“The concept for this crazy fantasy tale about being heartbroken was initiated by Roger Williams, our resident artistic genius,” explains Schofield. “We wanted to do something dark but light-hearted, to show that you should never take yourself too seriously, even in dark times.”

WONDERboom was formed in 1996 and consists of Cito (main vocals/guitar), Martin Schofield (guitar/vocals) and Wade Williams (bass), founding members who have been writing songs and performing together for over 22 years, and Jonathan Bell (drums), who joined them after the death of their friend and drummer, Garth McLeod, in 2013. The band took their name from a road sign pointing to a small town outside Kroonstad. “We liked the idea that it means different things to different people and can be pronounced in different ways,” explains Cito.

As one of South Africa’s longest-standing rock bands, WONDERboom boasts an impressive resumé – they have headlined many major South African festivals and have been nominated for five Best Rock Album SAMA’s. They also won the South African leg of the 2004 Global Battle of the Bands and came second worldwide at the finals in the London Astoria. Asked about a career highlight, the band’s answer is unanimous – in December 2017, they travelled to Chengdu, China to represent South Africa at the Silk Road Indie Music Festival in a music performance competition and won gold! Other highlights include sharing the stage with Muse, Korn, Chris Cornell, Kaizer Chiefs, 30 Seconds To Mars, Good Charlotte and some amazing local bands at Cokefest in 2008.

To commemorate their remarkable journey to date, WONDERboom will be touring South Africa from August. Explaining the reason behind their The Best Side Story Tour, the band says: “Our usual performances are balls-to-the-wall rock production shows, where we make sure the crowd is exhilarated and stomping. This, however, is an unplugged, storytelling type of show that will let our fans in on our most intimate experiences. Sometimes the stories behind certain songs are not what people expect and to have the opportunity to share these stories is rare. With The Best Side Story Tour we hope that audiences will get to know us better; individually and as a band.” In addition, they add: “Touring is a fantastic way to go around the country and play to audiences and in venues that don’t usually get to see us perform.”

WONDERBOOM will perform their two act, unplugged show around South Africa on the following dates:

  • 31 Aug – Rustique Boutique, Middelburg
  • 06 Sept – Barnyard Silverstar, Krugersdorp
  • 15 Sept – Casalinga, Muldersdrift
  • 21 Sept – Barnyard Plett
  • 22 Sept – Vinyl, Cape Town
  • 23 Sept – Café Roux Noordhoek, Kaapstad
  • 27 Sept – Barnyard Emperors, East Rand
  • 28 Sept – Barnyard Rivonia, Johannesburg
  • 13 Okt – Barnyard Casterbridge, Witrivier
  • 25 Okt – Musiekskuur (Rockwood Theatre), Pretoria
  • 26 Okt – Caversham Mill, KwaZulu-Natal
  • 03 Nov – Die Ou Pastorie, Brits
  • 10 Nov – Radium Beer Hall

For founding member, lead vocalist, songwriter and guitarist Cito (Martin Otto), music is his life. He has been involved in the music industry since he was seventeen and wouldn’t change it for the world. “When I’m not on stage or in studio, music continues to pulse through my heart. I love the role that music plays in this bizarre existence. Music has the power to make or break you,” he says. As for finding inspiration, he never runs short: “Sometimes it’s a groove that I hear in my head, other times it’ll be a line that someone has said, that just sticks and demands to be elaborated. It’s also wonderful to collaborate and when Martin sits in with me, we come up with the craziest ideas. Playing on new or other instruments also inspires me.” Cito is currently working on a number of side projects – one of which is his debut solo album – and does music direction and sound design for corporate and special events.

Martin Schofield, founding member, lead guitarist, songwriter and vocalist, is a British born and African raised lover of dogs, guitars, travel, tattoos, bacon and 50’s culture. Having worked in the industry since the age of sixteen, he has a long list of career highlights, but cites “being in WONDERboom with my brothers and paying the bills from music” as his personal best. Musically, Billy Duffy, John Squire, John Fruciante and Brian Setzer have had the biggest influence on his style. Martin is currently working on several side projects with Cito. He also does studio/session work and deals in vintage and used musical instruments.

Bassist Wade Williams has also been with the band from the very beginning. He has loved music from a very young age and, while his style is akin to the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea “because of my funky rock white boy thing”, it was George Michael’s special combination of production and emotion that got it all started for Wade. To him, playing live is an incredible privilege. “There are few better experiences than playing a show where you feel completely connected, as a band and with the audience. That’s what I live for.”

Drummer Jonathan Bell – who is also a qualified attorney – grew up in a musical family and has wanted to be a drummer for as long as he can remember. He started playing at the age of twelve and hasn’t stopped since. He enjoys all kinds of music, from the Beatles to Elton John, and everything in between. While he lists playing Oppikoppi 2014 in front of a massive crowd and winning gold at the Silk Road Indie Music Festival in China as career highlights, he believes the best is yet to come.

WONDERboom is undeniably one of South Africa’s greatest musical success stories, and their latest offerings – from Praying Mantis to The Best Side Story Tour – is set to continue to cement their place as local rock legends.

Press Release: BRYNN Releases Debut Album ‘Querencia’!

Post Image

Cape Town-based alt/folk/rock quintet BRYNN is the product of a few of South Africa’s finest musicians: Jules Terea, Hezron Chetty, David Van Vuuren (Southern Wild), Alex Smillie (Southern Wild) and Eddy Kriel. This stellar cast’s powerful performances, potent lyrics, theatrical energy, and fresh yet complex musicality have left audiences awestruck and demanding an album. Now, BRYNN delivers.

“Our mission is to express through music what we feel living in today’s world,” says frontman Jules Terea. “We want to create an experience that can hopefully help us all feel a little less alone.”

The Spanish word ‘querencia’ is defined as, “a place from which one’s strength is drawn, where one feels at home; the place where you are your most authentic self”

This theme is drawn through the album, with powerful lyrics like:

“…don’t forget to remind yourself that you are free
‘cause after all isn’t that what they tell you every night on your TV screen?”

Months before its release, Querencia has already captured the attention of bloggers and promoters throughout the country. The award-winning blog Texx and the City has labeled the first single from the album ‘About Time’ as one of the best local songs of 2017, calling it “a dreamy, powerhouse of a track, which positions [BRYNN] on unique grounds”.

Querencia was recorded and mixed by Raiven Hunter at Popsicle Studios and mastered by Vincente Espi at Songololo Music. The album features artwork by vibrant artist Chris Auret, and is designed like a canvas painting, thereby capturing the essential nature of this album: it is a piece of South African art, which we can have as our own.

BRYNN burst onto the Cape Town music scene in 2017 and already have a fiercely loyal fanbase and are attracting diverse crowds to every show they play. BRYNN has played main stage slots at festivals around the country, such as: Up the Creek, Smoking Dragon, Spark Festival and River Republic. In February 2018, BRYNN were hand picked by international rock legends, Incubus, to open for them at their Cape Town show during their South African tour. Immediately after this BRYNN embarked on a nationwide album launch tour. Their official launch event was hosted at The Mercury Live in Cape Town, featuring some of South Africa’s finest acts such as Southern Wild, Crimson House and Hezron Chetty & The ZugZwang.

Press Release: Deca and Len Muller Collaborate to Create Music for the WIN!

Post Image

The instrumental group, DECA, and the talented singer/songwriter/musician, Len Muller, joined forces and recorded an inspiring song together about victory and overcoming obstacles.

The new single, Oorwin, was released to radio stations nationwide on 5 March 2018!

DECA’s Douw Steyn comments: “We are big fans of Len Muller and we were so keen to do something new that wasn’t instrumental. In our eyes, Len was the perfect candidate and we’re so glad he agreed to work with us. We hope that this song inspires people to break past difficult times and to believe that anything is possible.”

William de Bruin, who wrote the song, went through a rough patch himself in 2017 where depression almost got the better of him, but with support of his friends and loved ones, he decided to beat it and overcome it.

“Douw and I have been writing together for some time. He is one of my best friends and he understands me very well. From a writer’s perspective, it’s how Oorwin started. Because Len is also an artist with a deeper understanding, we trusted him with the interpretation of the song – and he really did an excellent job of it. We often come across so many big egos in the industry, that Len was a breath of fresh air. His professionalism and humility made it so easy to work with him,” adds William.

Len adds that he loved the song from the first time that he heard it and that it was a great privilege to be able to record with the talented DECA.

“It’s always great to work with other artists who challenge me to grow more. I always want to make music with people who inspire me and give me hope. I really believe that this song will mean something to someone and that’s why I sing from my whole heart for the greater purpose.”

Oorwin is available on DECA’s latest album, DECA II and on iTunes:
